Theme

We Meet In Between explores spaces of transition—where certainty and doubt, belonging and displacement, tradition and transformation exist simultaneously rather than in opposition.

The in-between is a place of negotiation, tension, and possibility. It is where identities remain in process, meanings evolve, and relationships between people, materials, and ideas are continually reshaped. Though often unresolved, these states can create opportunities for movement, connection, and new ways of understanding.

Contemporary jewellery and small objects are uniquely positioned to engage with these ideas. Existing between body and object, function and expression, intimacy and visibility, they offer fertile ground for exploring ambiguity, material dialogue, and transformation.

Through this exhibition, VMAA seeks works that embrace complexity, investigate material relationships, and challenge fixed definitions of identity, place, and belonging.

Artists are invited to interpret the theme through conceptual, material, narrative, or process-driven approaches.

Eligibility

Open internationally to artists working in:

·       Contemporary jewellery

·       Wearable objects

·       Small sculptural metal objects

Eligibility Requirements

·       Submitted work must be original and created by the applicant.

·       Work must not have been exhibited in North America within the past three years.

·       Individual works or bodies of work may be submitted.

·       Contemporary jewellery submissions are particularly encouraged.

Submission Guidelines

Size Restrictions

·       No individual piece may exceed the dimensions of a standard letter sheet (8.5 × 11 inches / 21.6 × 27.9 cm).

·       All submitted works must fit within the approximate volume of a standard shoebox (13 × 7.5 × 5 inches / 33 × 19 × 13 cm).

Materials & Process

·       Open to all materials and techniques.

·       Experimental and interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged.

·       Artists are encouraged to explore relationships between materials, surfaces, textures, scale, and form.

·       Submissions should demonstrate thoughtful engagement with process and making.

Considerations

Artists may wish to consider how material relationships, contrasting elements, and formal decisions can reflect states of transition, tension, connection, ambiguity, or transformation.

The exhibition welcomes conceptual, wearable, sculptural, and process-based approaches that thoughtfully engage the relationship between object, body, and space.

Submission Requirements

Each submission must include:

·       3–5 images per work, showing multiple views where appropriate

·       A brief statement describing how the work relates to the exhibition theme

·       Materials and dimensions

·       Artist biography (maximum 250 words)

·       Website and social media links (optional)

Image Specifications

·       JPEG/JPG format

·       Minimum 2000 pixels on the longest side

·       Maximum 5 MB per image

·       Neutral or clean backgrounds preferred

·       Accurate colour representation encouraged

Application Fee

VMAA Members: $10 CAD

Non-Members: $55 CAD

Submission fees support the administration, jurying, promotion, and presentation of the exhibition.

Jury

A panel of Canadian and international jurors will review submissions. Jurors will be announced prior to the submission deadline.

Shipping

Artists are responsible for all shipping costs to and from the exhibition venue, including packaging, transit insurance, customs fees, duties, and any associated import/export charges.

Artists are responsible for ensuring work arrives safely and by the stated deadlines. Reusable and secure packaging for return shipping is strongly encouraged.

Detailed shipping instructions will be provided to selected artists upon acceptance.

Insurance

Accepted works will be insured through CCBC for the duration of the exhibition, including installation and exhibition periods.

Artists remain responsible for insuring works while in transit to and from the venue.

Sales

Works may be offered for sale during the exhibition. Artists will be asked to provide retail pricing for accepted works as part of the final submission process.

Information regarding sales procedures and commission structure will be provided to selected artists upon acceptance.
