Dear VMAA Community,This has been a tumultuous year. We hope that wherever you are, you're staying safe, kind and are able to create in peace and security.

If you haven't already had the chance to do so, we invite you to check out our new website. We will continue to build it out into a repository of knowledge, resources and useful links for our community.

On a related note, a warm and belated thank you to all who joined us for the VMAA AGM on May 30. We launched several calls for applications and voted in our 2020-2021 board of directors, most of whom are continuing on in their previous positions.

We are still seeking a Secretary, and those interested may contact me or check the volunteers page for more details. Please note our board is enjoying a much-needed break to rest and to tackle other projects. As such, we may address VMAA correspondence more sporadically until our return in the fall. Finally, I'd like to congratulate past president Jessica Atkinson, who has retired from the board of directors, and to thank her years of devoted service to VMAA. We'll sorely miss her grace and guidance, but wish her all the best and hope we may all gather as a community soon.

Sincerely, Ingrid Valou VMAA President

OPPORTUNITY: SHARED STUDIO SPACE

$250 | Bench Space at Franklin Studios

Franklin Studio has a few benches open. Now, with its return to safe and physically distanced operations, this studio community is actively seeking new members to fill these spots.

The scholarship bench will return soon, too. Franklin Studio plans to extend the tenure of our scholarship bench from three months to six – the better to facilitate better incubation and development for deserving new artists.

If you are simply searching for new space or tenants, feel free to post it directly on our Facebook page and message us with more details.

Call for Annual VMAA Exhibition Application Deadline | November 15, 2020

Applications are open for our 2021 group exhibition: Beaux Arts! We will be partnering with the Italian Cultural Centre to feature a group exhibition celebrating jewellery and metal arts in the sculptural form. 2021 is the 150th anniversary of Canadian sculptor Charles Marega, whose sculptural landmarks can be found around BC.  To mark this anniversary, we invite artists to submit works that explore the merging of classical forms and modern materials, the relationship of landmark and place, or their own interpretation of the beaux-arts.  Applicants may learn more at vancouvermetalarts.com. Please note that while any artist may apply, those picked to exhibit will be required to be VMAA members in good standing at the time of the exhibition.

Oh Snap! Photo Contest Application Deadline | September 15, 2020 Please note you will need to be a VMAA member in good standing to apply.

Taking photos of jewellery and metal art is tough! Full spectrum lighting and the right amount of diffusion are necessary, while macro lenses highlight every scratch and speck of dust. That mirror finish you spent hours perfecting reflects everything in the room.  Adding shadows and atmospheric drama? We are impressed because we know how hard it is. To celebrate the launch of our new website, VMAA presents an inaugural photo contest with cash prizes! We are seeking high quality images that represent our community to feature and we invite all members in good standing to submit.   This includes close-up photos of your work and photos of you working in-studio – or even of your workspace and work-in-progress pieces!  Learn more via VMAA's call for applications page.

Thank you all for reading! We'll soon be in touch again with more updates. Until next time. Warm regards, Ingrid Valou
