Artist Selection & Reception | EVOLVING SPACES: Transitional in Nature
Updated: Apr 21
The Vancouver Metal Arts Association is pleased to introduce the artists selected for its biennial juried members’ show, Evolving Spaces: Transitional in Nature.
For this exhibition, VMAA asked artists to create work that explores the realms of the interior and exterior life within themselves.
Where physical or emotional spaces change in such a way that they can no longer foster growth or survival, what becomes present in these evolving spaces?
They were asked to get into ideas of shrinking spaces, displacement, loss, of pursuing freedom, changes of perspective, self-discovery, and the search for safety. These artists investigated these liminal spaces in between what is lost and what could be gained, and discovered what is.
These works come from 24 artists, based in Canada, USA and Europe, many with roots in Asia, Middle East and Europe. The artists address those liminal spaces of aging, new motherhood, disconnection from family, living in a new country, new career, slavery, and the distress by the current climate and care for planet earth. Some are bold, some are subtle and hard to read, others bring humour and curiosity to the observer.
Evolving spaces was juried by Chantel Gushue, Steve Fong, and Louise Perrone.
Evolving Spaces will be exhibiting from January 25 through February 22, 2024. Join us at the opening reception January 25 at the CCBC Gallery from 6-8pm.
